What You'll Need

The Steps

  1. Use the car jack to lift the car, and then secure it with jack stands on each side.
  2. Remove the lug nuts with the wheel lug wrench and remove the wheel.
  3. Locate the brake caliper and remove the two 14mm caliper bolts with your ratchet and socket.
  4. Slide the brake caliper off of the brake pads and rotor.
  5. Use the brake piston compressor tool to compress the brake piston fully back into the caliper. This will make it possible to fit the new, thicker brake pads.
  6. Remove the old brake pads and clips from the brake caliper bracket.
  7. Install the new clips and brake pads into the bracket.
  8. Apply some high-temperature brake grease to the back of the new brake pads.
  9. Slide the brake caliper back over the new brake pads and rotor, then tighten the caliper bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.
  10. Replace the wheel and tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer's specifications.
  11. Lower the vehicle from the jack stands using the car jack.
  12. Once all the wheels are on the ground, press the brake pedal several times until you feel firm resistance. This seats the brake pads against the rotors.
  13. Lastly, test drive your car on a quiet road, applying the brakes several times from both low and moderate speed to ensure everything is working perfectly.
